An adult with autism will require special care into adulthood. The school system will only help children and once your autistic child reaches adulthood, there will be many obstacles to overcome. You can prepare for this time and this can make for an easy transition.

Childhood autism is often a precursor to autism in adulthood. An autistic childhood can be difficult for the entire family. If you are a parent of a severely autistic child you will have a responsibility for the rest of your life.

Instead of letting all therapy end when an autistic child reaches adulthood, there might be many programs that you can get your adult autistic child involved in. The parent and the child will be able to get out of the home for a while.

Some churches offer a program where they will set with an adult with special needs once a week, or when scheduled and this can give caregivers a much needed break and the adult with autism can socialize with others.


Living arrangements for the future need to be addressed when an adult has autism. If they will not be living alone, there are some other options. How independent an autistic adult can be will determine the right environment for healthy living.

Group living is often supervised and this can be an option for an adult with autism. This is a place where the adult will have a great deal of independence, but their activities will be monitored and there will be at least one responsible person on site at all times.

A group setting can help provide employment and there are many jobs that someone with autism can perform for a paycheck to help cover living expenses. This can be a great alternative to keeping an adult child in the home and there might not be the supervision in the home that is required by the adult child.

Planning is imperative for the future for the adult with autism. There are some great options that can help an adult living with autism and their family to become more independent with daily life.
